Diagnosing Tooth Decay

Laser System to Aid in Dental Decay Diagnosis

Stuart Clark now uses a revolutionary method of detecting dental decay. This is the DIAGNOdent laser system from Kavo.

DIAGNOdent works by directing light into the tooth and measuring changes in fluorescence. The unit evaluates fluorescence that develops when laser light falls on areas of decay and gives a numerical value to the degree of decay detected.

Why is this System Used?

With modern, preventive and minimal decay therapy, early diagnosis of decay is of crucial importance.

The increasing use of fluoride toothpastes and various mouthwashes has led to a decline in the incidence of decay and has therefore led to changes in the clinical picture of decay.

It can be more difficult to detect decay with traditional methods and there is often undetected decay lying underneath an intact enamel surface.

This is especially true in fissures and crevices of molar and premolar teeth.

X-rays can be misleading and give inconsistent results, and the old method of probing the teeth with a sharp examination probe, has now been discouraged by the dental profession.

What are the Benefits of Using DIAGNOdent?

The benefits are that we can now detect decay at a very early stage, before much damage has been done to the tooth and often before an open cavity has been formed.

This means that treatment can be kept to a minimum and the new technologies available, such as ozone treatment for decay, can be employed to reverse the decay, without the need for drilling and filling.

DIAGNOdent at Each Examination

Stuart now uses this accurate and reproducible method of detecting decay at each examination and also uses it to monitor the progress of lesions after ozone treatment and dietary advice.

It is proving to be an invaluable tool in the early detection of tooth decay and will ultimately help patients to keep their teeth healthy and strong.
